Stein Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The castle ruin Stein prominently overlooks the old town of Baden in the Swiss canton of Aargau. This hilltop castle, once an important stronghold, secured the strategically significant narrow pass between Schlossberg and Lägern, together with the Landvogteischloss.

History+

The origins of Stein Castle date back to before the year 1000, with the exact builders unknown, though the Counts of Nellenburg are considered probable. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, including the Lenzburgers and later the Kyburgs, before falling to the Habsburgs in 1264. Under Habsburg rule, it served as an important administrative center and house archive. In 1415, the castle was destroyed by the Confederates during the conquest of Aargau. Between 1657 and 1670, the city of Baden rebuilt it as a fortress, but it was again destroyed in 1712 during the Second Villmergen War. The demolition material was later used to build the city's Reformed Church.

Location+

The ruin of Stein is located in Baden, in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 433 meters above sea level.
