Stauff Castle
The Stauf Castle Ruin, a picturesque hilltop castle, is perched at approximately 524 meters above sea level in the Upper Austrian municipality of Haibach ob der Donau in the Eferding district. History+
The origins of Stauf Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was likely founded by Wernhard de Stove, an ancestor of the Counts of Schaunberg. Initially conceived as a family residence, the Schaunbergers later moved their main seat to Schaunberg Castle, making Stauf a secondary castle. Through inheritance, it passed to the Liechtenstein family, who, however, built a new main residence with Aschach Castle and increasingly neglected Stauf. By the end of the 16th century, already fallen into ruin, the castle was sold to the Jörger family. After this family fell into disfavor, Stauf was confiscated and sold to the Harrach family, who held the property until the 20th century.
