The history of the castle and the fortified Abbey of St. Lambrecht are closely intertwined. The castle was probably built in the 11th century by Markwart von Eppenstein within the abbey grounds.
In 1400, a new construction was undertaken by Abbot Rudolf von Liechtenegg. Under Abbots Johann Sachs (1478-1518) and Valentin Pierer (1515-1541), major renovations and new constructions took place. This included the fortification of the abbey, during which the gate tower of the castle was also built. Until the mid-17th century, the castle, also called a palace, served as the abbot's residence. Later, after the abbot moved his residence to the new abbey, the castle served as a gymnasium. In 1786, Emperor Josef II dissolved the abbey, and the castle was left to decay.
In 1843, under Abbot Joachim Suppan, the chapel and the keep were restored. The ruin is still owned by the Benedictine Abbey of St. Lambrecht today.
