Sonnenburg Castle

The documents are silent about the origin and fate of this fortified building, so one can only rely on assumptions. The builders of this castle were possibly Count Udalschalk, who is documented here in the 11th century, or the Lords of Mallentein, an assumption that has much in its favor. Finally, the Counts of Heunburg or the Ortenburg Counts could also be considered.

The castle is documented before 1345 as "Castrum Sunnenbergk iuxta Mallantin Fluvium" (Sonnenburg near the Malta River). Today, only the remains of a tower from the 11th or 12th century, built in early Romanesque architectural style, still exist. Around 1400, the castle was already in ruins. Later, this castle was often confused with Mallentein Castle. In the 19th century, the name of the ruin had been completely forgotten.

Only in a legend was it known as "Mühlbacher Schloss," the castle of giants. It was also associated with silver mining in the Feistritzgraben, which is still recalled by tunnels.
