Sigberg Castle
Sigberg Castle is a medieval castle ruin in Vorarlberg near Göfis. The entire area of the castle ruin is now a protected monument.
The complex was built starting in the middle of the 13th century, and in 1355 it was conquered by Count Rudolf of Feldkirch. When he got into a dispute with his own citizens and they sought refuge in Sigberg, he had the castle destroyed in 1355.
In 1435, the castle was destroyed by Count Friedrich of Toggenburg, and by the beginning of the 17th century, it was merely a ruin – only the chapel remained in use until 1637.
The name, appearing as "Segavio" in the oldest documentary evidence, is derived from the Celtic "segos" (victory, power, strength) and refers to a fortified settlement. Sigberg means the same as the Romance "Montfort".
