Siersburg Castle

The Siersburg castle ruin majestically overlooks the Siersburg district of the municipality Rehlingen-Siersburg in the district of Saarlouis. As a high medieval hilltop castle, it not only offers a fascinating glimpse into past times but also an impressive view over the surrounding landscape.
History+
The origins of Siersburg likely date back to the 11th century, when it was built by Count Sigebert of Saargau on a hill above the Nied and Saar rivers. Its strategic location served to control river traffic on the Saar and important trade routes, including the Flanders Road. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, from the Counts of Saarbrücken to the Dukes of Lorraine and then to the Archbishop of Trier, who conquered it around 1175. Despite repeated attempts by the Lorrainers to shake off Trier's feudal sovereignty, this only succeeded after the death of Archbishop Balduin of Luxembourg. Siersburg developed into an important Lorraine regional castle and served to administer the Trier-Lorraine joint lordship of Merzig-Saargau. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was repeatedly captured and recaptured by French and imperial troops, leading to considerable destruction. After the war, Siersburg increasingly lost its military significance and fell into disrepair, exacerbated by French demolitions in 1677 and a lightning strike in the 18th century. The French Revolution sealed its extensive destruction in 1793.
