No documentary records of this castle have been preserved. In literature, it is mostly mentioned together with Schwarzenberg Castle. It is presumed that Schwarzenöd was destroyed and abandoned simultaneously with Schwarzenberg around 1230.
The name "Schwarzenöda" indicates a popular naming and attempts to establish a connection to the nearby Schmerbach-Schwarzenberg. Possibly, the complex can be seen as the seat of a local noble family. The ruin is currently owned by the Windhag'sche Stipendienstiftung.
