Schwarzau Castle

Already in the 11th century, wooden structures stood on the plateau of the small castle hill, which were later replaced by a stone fortified house. Its wall structure suggests that it was only built around the middle of the 13th century. The complex was surrounded by palisades. In 1179, a noble residence is mentioned for the first time when Egelof de Suarzahe is named as a witness in a document by Duke Leopold V. The Lords of Schwarzau were ministeriales of the Counts of Peilstein.

At the end of the 13th century, the fortified building was expanded by the construction of an outer bailey. Between 1340 and 1366, the castle belonged to Konrad dem Fritzelsdorfer, who also called himself after Schwarzau. In 1394, the chaplain of Wimberg, of whom only the first name Wolfgang is known, arranged for the seizure of the property. Shortly thereafter, the fortress must have been abandoned and soon fell into disrepair. After that, it was no longer mentioned in any document.

Around the middle of the 16th century, the village of Schwarzau belonged to the dominion of Pöggstall and was connected with the office of Fritzelsdorf. Today, the former castle area is in agricultural ownership.
