Schönarts Castle
The castle ruin Schönarts, also called Alte Burg (Old Castle), is the remnant of a spur castle on a approximately 194-meter-high terrain spur west of the hamlet of Schönarts in the municipality of Eußenheim in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart in Bavaria.
The castle was built in 1268 by the Lords of Henneberg and named "Castrum Schonenhart". Even during construction, the then Bishop Iring von Reinstein of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg decreed a construction stop and demolition of the castle, as he saw it as a threat to the bishopric's dominance in the Karlstadt region. There is no evidence of a renewed construction of the castle.
The castle site still shows the remains of an outer wall, the foundations of the keep, and ramparts of the castle moat on the hillside.
