Schalun Castle
The castle ruin of Schalun, also known as Wildschloss, is perched on a rocky terrace above Vaduz in Liechtenstein. This hilltop castle, with origins dating back to the 12th century, today offers a fascinating glimpse into the medieval architecture and history of the region.
History+
The first construction phase of Schalun Castle is dated to the late 12th century. In 1237, the name Schalun was first mentioned in connection with a donation. During the 13th century, the complex was expanded with stronger walls and additional buildings. Later archaeological findings suggest that the castle was evacuated at a later point and subsequently destroyed by fire. In the 18th century, the ruin came into the possession of the sovereign prince before being handed over to the municipality of Vaduz. After approximately 50 years of private ownership, the castle complex has been owned by the municipality of Vaduz again since 1933.

The Schalun castle ruin is located at an elevation of approximately 844 m above sea level in the municipality of Vaduz, in the Vaduz district, in the Oberland region of the Principality of Liechtenstein.

Visitors can today explore large parts of the core structures of the Schalun castle ruin. The palas still features walls over two meters thick in places and building remnants up to ten meters high. Of the keep, the south and west walls remain, with the south wall, featuring wall remnants up to three meters high, being particularly well preserved.
