The Rundersburg is widely believed to be the oldest ruin in the Kamp Valley. Together with the neighboring castles of Thurnberg and Idolsberg, the Rundersburg had to secure the part of the Polansteig leading from Horn to Zwettl, which was one of the oldest trade routes in the Waldviertel.
In a deed of gift by Albero de Ronnenberc, also known as Albero von Raan, the name of the castle is first mentioned around 1182/89. In 1194, a Ulrich von Ronnenberch is mentioned. With Ortolf von Roneberch, the family died out around 1293. He was a follower of the last Babenberg Margarethe. After his death, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair.
The Rundersburg became an escheated fief to the sovereign and was attached to his dominion of Gars. In 1681, the ruin with the surrounding forests came under the dominion of Idolsberg. In 1895, Rudolf Graf Hoyos-Sprinzenstein acquired the castle area. It still belongs to his descendants today.
