Rudelsburg Castle

Rudelsburg Castle Ruin, a hilltop castle, is perched on a shell limestone rock on the south bank of the Saale River, approximately 85 meters above the water. It is located above Saaleck, a district of Bad Kösen, and stands as a prominent landmark in the Burgenlandkreis of Saxony-Anhalt. Its exposed position and preserved architectural elements make it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and hikers.
History+
Rudelsburg was likely built in the High Middle Ages by the Bishops of Naumburg to secure important trade routes, including the Via Regia and the Saale bridge near Bad Kösen. It was first documented in 1171, when it was owned by Naumburg ministerials. In 1238, the castle was enfeoffed to the Margraves of Meissen, who were permitted to expand its fortifications. Rudelsburg was often a site of conflict between the Naumburg bishops and the Margraves of Meissen. In 1348, the outer bailey was destroyed by the citizens of Naumburg. After changing noble owners, the castle was finally destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and subsequently fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, the ruin was rediscovered as an excursion destination during the era of castle romanticism and gained national recognition from 1855 as a meeting place for the Kösener SC-Verband.
