History+
The origins of Rozafa Castle date back to the 4th century BC, when Illyrians founded the city of Scodra at this strategically important location. Over the centuries, the complex was used and expanded by various powers, including Byzantines, local princes, and especially the Venetians, who significantly strengthened the fortifications. In 1479, after a ten-month siege, the castle fell to the Ottomans. It remained inhabited until the second half of the 17th century and served as a military base for the Ottoman army until 1913, before Montenegrins conquered the city.
