Rosenburg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Rosenburg castle ruin is perched on a molasse rock in Herisau-Krombach in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland. This historic site, often confused with the nearby Rosenberg castle, was once a strategically important point on an old passage to Toggenburg.

History+

The construction of Rosenburg is dated around the year 1200. It was probably built by the Lords of Rorschach, who held the Meieramt in Herisau, as an administrative center on land originally belonging to the Abbey of St. Gallen. A branch of this family later named themselves “von Rosenburg” after the castle and remained feudal tenants of the Abbot of St. Gallen. In the mid-14th century, the castle estate with its agriculture was managed by a peasant administrator. Towards the end of the century, the castle was still in the possession of the Abbey of St. Gallen. During the Appenzell Wars, it was conquered and destroyed by the peasants as a hated abbess-Austrian stronghold and was never rebuilt thereafter.

Location+

The Rosenburg castle ruin is located in Herisau-Krombach in the Hinterland district, canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 916 m above sea level.

On site+

The Rosenburg castle ruin is now accessible to visitors and can be explored. The striking stump of the once significantly higher, almost square keep is preserved, as are remnants of the curtain wall and foundations of former economic and residential buildings.
