Reuland Castle

Archaeological findings confirm that the castle site was already in use in the 10th century, with the Romans having previously built a fort here. The oldest surviving foundations date from the 12th century, when the castle served as a residence for the Lords of Rulant. In the 13th century, the complex featured a ring wall surrounded by a moat, with a tower in the northwest corner. The lineage of Reuland died out in 1313, after which the castle passed into the possession of the Lords of Blankenheim, who sold it in 1322 to John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg and King of Bohemia. From the mid-15th century, semi-circular gun towers were erected. After the death of Gerhard von Palant around 1489, inheritance disputes arose, which Emperor Maximilian I settled in 1492 by enfeoffing Christoph I of Baden with Reuland. In the 16th century, the defensive structure evolved into a stately residence. Following the death of the last heirs in the 18th century, the castle was destroyed by French troops in 1794 and sold for demolition in 1830. In 1923, the Belgian state acquired the site to build an anti-aircraft position. Since 1980, the castle has been a protected monument and has been gradually restored since 1988.

The castle ruin of Reuland is located in Burg-Reuland in the Liège district, in the Walloon Region of Belgium, at an altitude of approximately 375 m above sea level.

Today, the impressive ruin can be visited. A large part of the three-story keep in the southwest corner has been preserved and was partially rebuilt in 1901. Inside the round tower, remnants of fireplaces are still visible. The southeastern corner of the area is adorned by a bastion with a coat of arms stone from 1604, displaying the coat of arms of the Pallandt-Myllendonck family.
