Rauterburg Castle

The Rauterburg was the original castle of the Counts of Heunburg and the predecessor of the Haimburg. It presumably dates back to the Carolingian era (9th or 10th century). The Heunburg counts, originally from Saxony, initially used the Rauterburg as their ancestral castle.

The oldest verifiable member of this family is Gero I, who appears in a Brixen document in 1070. He is also considered the builder of the Haimburg. In 1228, the Counts of Heunburg moved their residence to Bleiberg. With Count Hermann von Heunburg, the family died out in the male line in 1322. Their inheritance passed to the related family of the Counts of Pfannberg. When they also died out, they were followed by the Counts of Görz.

Through the Peace of Pusarnitz, the Görz possessions fell to the Habsburg Frederick III in 1460. This marked the beginning of a frequent change of owners for the dominion. They leased it, among others, to Bernhard Thalant in 1499, to the Graßwein in 1539, and to the Urschenbeck in 1623. Since 1886, the ruin has been owned by the Helldorff family. In 1920, a large part of the ruin was demolished and the material was used for road construction. Today, only a few remains of a rectangular building, divided into four unequal rooms, can be seen. No architectural details have been preserved.
