Radegg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Radegg castle ruin, a fascinating testament to medieval architecture, rises majestically above the Wangental valley in Switzerland. Located on a steeply sloping rock spur of the Rossberg, it offers an impressive insight into the history of the Canton of Schaffhausen.

History+

The origins of Radegg Castle date back to the early 13th century, when it was built around 1200. Little is known about its builder, the Lords of Radegg, and the exact circumstances of its construction, although the family is mentioned as early as 1188. Documentary mentions of a knight Rudolf from the house of Radegg around 1225 indicate connections to the Rheinau Monastery. The castle, built in a single construction phase, comprised a mighty tower, an intermediate building with a cistern, and another tower. Its massive walls, up to four meters thick on the attack sides, bear witness to its defensiveness. The castle was destroyed shortly after 1300, presumably by fire, as reddened limestones inside suggest. However, the exact cause and those responsible remain unclear, with a possible protective function for Rheinau Monastery against the Lords of Krenkingen being discussed as a motive. The baronial family of Radegg died out in 1333.

Location+

The Radegg castle ruin is located at an altitude of approximately 572 m above sea level in Wilchingen-Osterfingen, in the Unterklettgau district, Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
