Rabenswald Castle
Rabenswalde Castle is the ruin of a spur castle on a mountain spur in the Rabenswald forest and belongs to the area of the city of Kölleda (district Großmonra) in the Sömmerda district, about 1.5 km south of Garnbach, a district of Wiehe in the Kyffhäuser district in Thuringia.
Around 1233–1237, the Counts of Wiehe, from the family of the Counts of Kevernburg, had a new castle named Rabenswalde built in the Rabenswald forest. It consisted of an outer bailey and a main castle, which were secured by an earthwork. The castle served as the residence of the noble family, who now called themselves Counts of Rabenswalde-Wiehe, and as the seat of power of the eponymous County of Rabenswalde.
As a result of the Thuringian Counts' War (1342–1346), Rabenswalde Castle was destroyed and razed to the ground around 1350. Of the former two-part castle complex, only remnants of the 40-meter-long and 1.5-meter-thick defensive wall and the moat remain today.
