The castle ruin Pernegg is located in the municipality of Pernegg an der Mur in Styria.
The ruin lies "on a mountain ridge steeply sloping to the east and west above the village of Pernegg".
Pernegg, one of the oldest lordships in Styria and always a free holding, was probably built by a free man named Pero; Ulrich von Pernegg was documented in 1143. Pernegg was a ministerialis of the Margraves of Styria and notorious for its belligerence. In 1322, the castle was expanded; neighboring properties were acquired to extend the estate. Wilhelm von Pernegg was the Styrian governor in 1427 and the supreme court master of Duke Friedrich.
Later, Pernegg Castle served as a base for robbers and highwaymen, and its lord, Wilhelm von Pernegg, participated in the raids. He was captured in 1525, imprisoned, and died in prison in 1532. In 1543, the Pernegg family died out, and their property was divided. Gallus and Moritz von Racknitz became the new owners of the castle. From 1577, Gallus built a new castle, and the old castle began to decay due to a lack of maintenance. It is currently a ruin.
Architecture+
The castle ruin Pernegg is heavily overgrown and consists of two parts: the upper castle and the lower castle, of which a square tower remains. Access leads to the upper castle via a fortified curtain wall reinforced with towers, interrupted by moats. The ruin of a barbican is preserved between the second and third moats. The elongated castle courtyard was bordered by residential buildings, which are only preserved as wall remnants in the east. A palas was attached to the keep. Since the attack side of Pernegg Castle was in the northwest, a semicircular shield wall was built, also to withstand artillery fire.
The lower castle dates from the 14th century and was secured by a ring wall, which currently has a height of eight meters. All buildings were demolished in the 16th century and used as building material for Pernegg Castle.
