Odenbach Castle
Odenbach Castle, later also called Weiherturm (Pond Tower), is the ruin of a moated castle in the municipality of Odenbach in the district of Kusel in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The moated castle (later also referred to as a water palace), built between 1150 and 1180 by the Counts of Veldenz at the confluence of the Odenbach and Glan rivers, was mentioned in 1202. Another owner of the castle was the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. From 1620 to 1623, the castle became uninhabitable, and in 1683, the tower was destroyed by the French during an explosion. In the winter of 1850/51, the rest of the castle collapsed. Of the former castle complex, the renovated remains of the late Romanesque keep, today's Weiherturm, are preserved as a landmark of the municipality, as well as the renovated and accessible curtain wall.

Duke Friedrich Ludwig of Palatinate-Zweibrücken-Landsberg (1619–1681), regent of the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, married his commoner wife Maria Elisabeth Hepp (1635–1722) after the death of his first wife Juliane Magdalena of Palatinate-Zweibrücken (1621–1672). As this was a marriage not of equal standing, the children from this union were not to be dynastically entitled to inherit and received the rank and name as Barons of Fürstenwärther, Burgsassen zu Odenbach (castle residents of Odenbach). However, the name suffix referring to Odenbach Castle remained only a sonorous title, as the complex was already uninhabitable at that time. The family bears a tower as its coat of arms, which presumably also symbolizes that of Odenbach Castle. The most famous of these namesakes was the Austrian Field Marshal Lieutenant Baron Friedrich Karl von Fürstenwärther (1769–1856), on whose official portraits the Odenbach name suffix is usually recorded.
