History+

The origins of Oberfalkenstein Castle, also known as Valchenstain, date back to 1164, when it was first documented, making it one of the oldest castles in Carinthia. The Lords of Falkenstein, ministerials of the Counts of Görz, were the original owners. After the family died out around 1300, the castle was divided and granted to various nobles. In 1394, Count Heinrich IV of Görz pledged Oberfalkenstein to Duke Albrecht III of Austria, thus transferring it into Habsburg possession. Later, in 1504, Maximilian I pledged the castle to Julian, Count of Lodron. Despite efforts to preserve it, the complex fell into disrepair from 1693 under the Barons of Sternbach, who resided at Groppenstein Castle. In 1989, the ruin was sold to Mr. Weißmann.
