Niederviehhausen Castle

The castle ruin Niederviehhausen, also called Viehhausen Castle, is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 430 m above sea level on the edge of a high plateau above the Schwarze Laber in the area of the Viehhausen district of the municipality of Sinzing in the district of Regensburg in Bavaria.

The castle was built in the 12th century and first mentioned in a document in 1181 with a Brouno de Vienhhausen. The Lords of Viehhausen were probably ministeriales of the Regensburg burgrave and owned the castle until 1266.

At the end of the 13th century, the castle came into the possession of the Wittelsbachs, who occupied it with caretakers until the 14th century. The castle was probably in the possession of the notorious Chamerauer robber knights, who had their ancestral seat at Chamerau Castle and also named themselves after this castle, as a pledge from the Bavarian duke after 1368. Through an arbitration award by the emperor, the castle returned to the Wittelsbachs in 1434, followed by several owners, and the castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War.
