Niedertrixen Castle

Niedertrixen Castle was built in 1251 by Seyfried von Mahrenberg. It is also popularly known as Alt-Tachenstein or Urschenböck. The latter name comes from the Urschenböck family, who expanded the castle in the 17th century by building a palace.

After Seyfried's death, Otto von Emmerberg became the heir and transferred the property in 1288 to Duke Meinhard II from the House of Görz-Tirol. In 1311, Duke Otto pledged Niedertrixen to Bamberg. The Resch von Lichtenberg followed, then Christof Gadolt, and through his daughter to the Lords of Spangstein. In 1353, Duke Albrecht II's charter first mentions the "nider vest ze Truchsen".

Around 1600, the castle and lordship came into the possession of the Barons von Urschenböck, who in 1623 also acquired the Heunburg lordship and united both lordships. The palace building was essentially constructed or expanded by the Urschenböck family. The Urschenböck family was followed by the Rosenberg family as owners, then the Egger family, and in 1886 the Barons von Helldorff, in whose family the property remains to this day.

This castle fell into ruin from 1750 onwards, of which only minor remains are still present today.
