Neuhausen Old Castle

The castle ruin Neuhausen in the municipality of Berge (district Neuhausen) is located west of Putlitz in the Prignitz district in the northwest of Brandenburg.

In 1147, Neuhausen was destroyed when Margrave Albrecht the Bear undertook a crusade against the pagan Wends. In 1318, Neuhausen was mentioned as "novum castrum prope Perleberg". In 1334, Neuhausen belonged to the Perleberg region and was transferred by the Margrave to Count Heinrich von Schwerin. In 1345, Margrave Ludwig I granted Neuhausen to the knight Nicolaus von Lobeck.

The von Rohr family became owners of Neuhausen in 1396. In 1618, the von Rohr family sold half of Neuhausen to Georg von Winterfeld. The von Winterfeld family also acquired the Rohr share of Neuhausen in 1712. In 1738, the Neuhausen manor house was converted into a baroque three-wing complex by Johann Gebhard von Winterfeld. The conversion used parts of the old castle (vaulted cellar, chapel, gate passage); parts of the old Renaissance complex, including a tower, remained.

In 1903, the manor house and farmyard were rebuilt and renovated, and the side wings were extended. In 1944, the von Busse family inherited the property from the last Winterfeld at Neuhausen. In 1945, the von Busse family was dispossessed and expelled. The estate became a supply depot for the Red Army. 181 war refugees lived in the village and the manor house. In 1979, the manor house stood empty after being closed by building authorities and has since been left to decay. Some farm buildings of the estate were also demolished due to the risk of collapse.
