Nejdek Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Nejdek Castle Ruin, also known as Neudek, perches on a granite rock above a bend in the Rolava River in the Czech Karlovarský kraj. This historic fortress, whose origins are presumed to be in the 13th century, is now a prominent landmark in the region and bears witness to a turbulent past.

History+

The exact period of Nejdek Castle's construction is not fully clear, but architectural features of its tower suggest it was a sovereign watchtower from the 13th century. Konrad Plick is considered the first documented owner between 1300 and 1341, whose family received the castle as a royal fief in 1340 and held it until 1410. After frequent changes of ownership, the Counts of Schlick took possession in 1446. In 1602, Stephan von Schlick sold the castle to Friedrich Colon von Fels. During the Thirty Years' War, the Protestant Colons were forced to abandon the castle, after which Hermann Czernin von Chudenitz acquired it. By this time, the castle was largely destroyed. Its ruins, with the exception of the Black Tower, were dismantled and used for the construction of the new castle in the 17th century. The Black Tower was later converted into a bell tower, received a new ground-floor entrance in the 18th century, and was reduced in height and given its current roof in 1831.

Location+

The Nejdek Castle Ruin is located in the town of Nejdek in the Karlovarský kraj, a region in northwestern Czech Republic. It stands at an elevation of approximately 560 meters above sea level.

Visitors today can explore the remains of the Nejdek Castle Ruin. Notably, the distinctive Black Tower, which once served as a bell tower, has been preserved. Sparse remnants of the original castle structure, including parts of the defensive wall made of hewn rock and a transverse wall with a loophole, are still visible.
