The remains of the castle can be visited

The remains of the vanished hilltop castle Burg Morau are located in the Morau district of the municipality of St. Oswald bei Haslach in the Rohrbach district of Upper Austria (near "Schusterhäusl", to the right of the path to the Schwanzenberg Log Flume).

Burg Morau was destroyed by the Hussites in 1427. Whether the castle bore the same name as the present-day village is not known, but presumed; likewise, the names of the first owners are unknown. Only in 1650 does the judge of Haslach, Hanns Dietmayr von Morau († 1637), refer to himself by this name. The name refers to the castle site, which was probably no longer habitable at that time, but to which noble rights and privileges were still attached. According to oral tradition, the stones of the castle are said to have been used for the construction of the church tower of St. Oswald in the 18th century.

Burg Morau Today+

Burg Morau stood on the "Schlossberg" site. The now heavily overgrown wall sections still show a thickness of 1.50 to 2.30 m. As can be deduced from archaeological findings, two round towers were connected here by a shield wall and protected the access. A continuous wall enclosed the castle grounds. The castle was located on the top of a moderately high mountain (elevation 683 m). To the north, the castle grounds drop steeply into a gorge. In front of the castle was a moat of considerable depth. The remains of the medieval complex are still recognizable despite leveling.
