Monsberg Castle

The Monsberg ruin, also called Munt's Castle, is a castle ruin on a rock spur above the Lauter southwest of the Erbstetten district of the city of Ehingen in the Alb-Donau district in Baden-Württemberg.

Of the spur castle built in the 13th century by the Lords of Monsberg, a "Ulricus de Mundisberc" is mentioned in 1258. On April 21, 1379, the castle with all its accessories was sold by Count Konrad von Aichelberg to Hans vom Stein zu Klingenstein, and from 1405 to 1411 all Monsberg possessions went to Zwiefalten Monastery. In July 1495, the castles of Monsberg and Wartstein were destroyed. The castle was abandoned as a residence and fell into disrepair. In 1515, the castle site became the property of the Dukes of Bavaria and on July 6, 1593, it became a fief of the Barons of Speth. In 1848, the ruin became the property of the municipality of Erbstetten. Former owners are also said to have been the ministeriales of Stuben. Monsberg Castle was also called "Munt's Castle", presumably a ministerialis of the Counts of Wartstein.

Of the castle complex, remains of walls, presumably of a residential tower within the former core castle, as well as remains of a cellar vault and a neck ditch are still preserved.
