Mölltheuer Castle

Between 1234 and 1237, a Heinricus de Pench is mentioned as a Gorizia judge. The place is also repeatedly mentioned in the Gorizia Urbar from 1299. The brothers Bernhardus and Bertholdus de Penche, who appear in the documents from 1271 and 1277, were probably Gorizia ministeriales who were settled at Penk Castle. In 1301, Count Albert granted Nikolaus von Lienz property in Penk, which Heinrich von Gschieß had previously held. In the division of lands of the Gorizia Counts in 1307, Penk fell to Count Albert. This is the first documented mention of a castle in Penk.

In 1390, Friedrich de Fleck resided in the castle. Through the Peace of Pusarnitz, the castle fell to the Habsburgs in 1460. In 1467, Emperor Frederick III enfeoffed Erasmus Flekh with the house in Penk and the castle site. The mention of a house in Penk next to the castle site indicates that, in addition to the old, already dilapidated castle, a small palace existed. This is also evident from the enfeoffment document from 1587, with which Archduke Karl enfeoffed Felicitas, the daughter of the late Erasmus Flekh. In 1600, Felicitas' husband Josef Roithner was enfeoffed with the lordship. In 1666, a Josef Bernhard, Knight of Penk, is mentioned. The old castle was already a ruin at that time.

From the 17th to the 19th century, Mölltheuer was owned by the Sternbach family. Today, the ruin, of which only remnants of a residential tower, some walls of residential buildings, and remnants of the curtain wall remain, is in private ownership.
