Liemberg Castle
The castle ruin Liemberg is located in Carinthia, west above the village of the same name in the municipality of Liebenfels on the steep slope of the Göseberg.
The complex, built in the 12th century, consists mainly of a Romanesque outwork round tower of about 9 meters in diameter, a well-preserved Gothic keep, and the palas, which has also undergone structural changes in more recent times. Due to its small size, this rather unusual castle complex is underestimated.
The outwork, built in rocky steps below the castle, was adapted as a cottage and is still inhabited today.
The area around the castle was already used in prehistoric and Roman times. The oldest documented mention of Liemberg dates back to 1167 (Wolfpertus de Liebenberch). There are reports of damage from the Friuli earthquake in 1348. Around 1688, Liemberg was described by Valvasor as the "old, now completely desolate and abandoned castle, to be seen only like a tower."
