Lichteneck Castle

Lichteneck Castle, also known as Liehtenekke, is the ruin of a spur castle on a 242 m above sea level high rock spur above Hecklingen, a district of the city of Kenzingen, in the Emmendingen district in Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was built between 1265 and 1290 by the Counts of Freiburg and mentioned in 1290 as "Liehtenekke". It later came into the possession of the Counts Palatine of Tübingen-Lichteneck. The castle was destroyed in 1433 during the Geroldseck War, rebuilt in the 16th century, and finally destroyed by the French in 1675 during the Dutch War. Remains of the curtain wall with a diameter of two to three meters and wall remains of the core castle are still preserved from the spur castle. The castle is privately owned by the Flemming family and is available for events.
