Layen Castle
Burg Layen is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Schlossbühl near the pilgrimage chapel in the municipality of Rümmelsheim in the district of Bad Kreuznach in Rhineland-Palatinate.
In 1169, the castle was first mentioned together with "Rimilisheim" as "castro Leiga" (= fortified house Layen) and belonged to the properties in Waldlaubersheim, Genheim, Roth, Schweppenhausen and Eckenroth of the Lords of Bolanden.
Burg Layern (on a Laye = on the stone), which was also partly owned by the Knights vom Stein, served to protect the Trollbach valley through which the road led to the heights. In 1680, the castle, of which the keep still stands today, was restored.
