Lauterburg Castle
The Lauterburg ruin is a castle ruin on a spur near the village church of the Lauterburg district of the municipality of Essingen in the Ostalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg.
The hilltop castle was probably built by the Lords of Lauterburg in the 12th century. In 1128, Adalbert von Lauterburg was mentioned for the first time. A new building was constructed in the 13th to 14th centuries. In 1594, the new castle was built in Renaissance style and fell victim to a fire disaster in 1732. The castle church was built in 1607 and is now the village church.
The Hohenstaufen, the Lords of Oettingen and the Barons of Woellwarth are named as owners. Today the ruin is privately owned.
Significant remains of the enclosing walls of the former castle complex are still preserved, the outer bailey (75 × 25 meters) is accessible, the main castle is not accessible due to the risk of collapse.
