Landsee Castle
The Landsee Castle Ruin, one of Central Europe's largest castle complexes, rises majestically in central Burgenland. It is situated on a rocky spur, offering an impressive sight amidst the Landseer Berge Nature Park. Its name, derived from the Hungarian “Lánzsér,” could mean “lancer” or refer to an old German word for “outstanding,” underscoring the former significance of the site.
History+
The name “Landeshere” was first mentioned in 1158, and the castle itself was first documented in 1263. Originally located on the border between the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary, it belonged to Hungary before 1222. After several changes of ownership, the castle came into the possession of Nikolaus Esterházy in 1612. An initial fire in 1707 destroyed parts of the complex, which was subsequently repaired. However, a more devastating fire in 1790 led to the castle's final abandonment, as the heavily indebted successor, Prince Anton Esterházy, could not finance its reconstruction. The ruin then served as a quarry before being secured and made accessible to visitors from 1968 onwards.
