Landsberg Castle

Landsberg Castle, also known as Moschellandsburg or Landsburg, is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Moschellandsberg near the town of Obermoschel in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It can be rented for private parties.

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1130, when Count Emicho von Schmidburg bequeathed the castle to Gerlach I von Veldenz. After the extinction of the Counts of Veldenz in the male line in 1444, the castle, along with the County of Veldenz, passed to Stephan von Pfalz-Simmern and, in the division of inheritance, fell to the Pfalz-Zweibrücken line. Stephan's son Ludwig the Black owned the castle from 1453 to 1489 and expanded it into a strong fortress. The castle suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years' War; it was handed over to the Spanish in 1620 and taken over by Croats in 1622. Afterwards, in 1631, the Swedes moved into the castle and used it as a barracks. In 1689, the castle was destroyed in the War of the Palatine Succession by the troops of King Louis XIV. The ruin was returned to its original owners in 1693. The castle was declared national property during the French Revolution.

The most extensive maintenance and renovation work since the castle's destruction took place in 1977 and 1978. A few years later, from 1981 to 1983, a shelter was built over the cellar vaults.

The castle is now owned by the city of Obermoschel, which has been carrying out annual renovation work, as well as maintenance and expansion work, since 2005. In 2007, parts of the castle complex were planted with old rose varieties and the camp meadow was bordered with fruit trees.
