Klosterberg Castle
The Klosterberg is a 382.6 m high mountain in the Bavarian Spessart. It is located in the district of Aschaffenburg north of Rottenberg. On the summit of the Klosterberg once stood a high medieval castle complex, of which parts of a tower wall and a ring wall can still be seen today. It has been proven that the castle on the Klosterberg was built around the 13th century, even before the fortification on the opposite Gräfenberg. During an excavation in 1973, ceramic remains were found and parts of the ruin were uncovered. It can be assumed that the ruins on the Klosterberg are the remains of the "Burg Waldenberg", which for a long time could not be localized.

According to legend, in the 14th century there was a castle complex of the Knights Templar on the Klosterberg. On the opposite Gräfenberg stood the castle of the friendly Lords of Griefenberg. The ringing of a bell was intended to secure mutual help in case of danger. On a stormy night, the Klosterburg was attacked. The ringing of the bell was in vain, as it was the Griefenbergers themselves who ambushed the Templars and slew them all. The next morning, some helpers from Rottenberg rushed to their aid. Only the old prior still showed signs of life. With his last breaths, he was able to name the traitors. Thereupon, Archbishop Peter von Aspelt had the castle of the Griefenbergers destroyed and their lords executed.
