Khünburg Castle
The castle ruin Khünburg stands on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 839 meters on the southern slope of the Spitzegel northeast of Lake Pressegger in the municipality of Hermagor.
The Khünburg was first mentioned in a document in 1189 as the property of the ministerialis Count Pero de Kinburch.
From the 13th century, the castle was owned by the Diocese of Bamberg. In 1311, the complex was pledged to Duke Henry of Carinthia. After the fire of 1540 or 1541, the castle was left to decay. The Khünburg family moved their seat to Khünegg Castle in Egg (Hermagor). A restoration took place in 1913.
The Romanesque complex was built around 1200. It is about 30 by 40 meters in size. No significant structural changes were made after the middle of the 14th century.
Well preserved are the approximately 15-meter-high keep, which now serves as a viewing tower, large parts of the five to eight-meter-high curtain wall, and the ground floor wall of a residential building south of the keep.
