The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Kaunas Castle Ruin, a historical structure of great significance, is located in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania. It marks a strategically important point at the confluence of the Neris and Nemunas rivers and bears witness to a turbulent past closely linked to the conflicts between Lithuanians and the Teutonic Order.

History+

First documented in 1361, the Lithuanian castle in Kaunas was a recurring target of attacks by the Teutonic Order. Despite repeated conquests and destructions, it was always promptly rebuilt by the Lithuanians. These conflicts were part of the Order's ambition to connect its territories in East Prussia and Livonia into a contiguous domain. The castle in Kaunas represented a significant obstacle to this. The conflict was decided with the defeat of the Teutonic Order in the Battle of Tannenberg in July 1410. Subsequently, Kaunas lost its military importance but developed into a flourishing trading center. As early as 1408, the settlement received Magdeburg city rights, and in 1440, a Hanseatic office was opened, solidifying its rise to a rich and large city within the Polish-Lithuanian state.
