Kalø Castle
The castle ruin of Kalø stands on a small island, connected to the mainland by a causeway. Located in Kalø Vig, not far from Rønde, it bears witness to a turbulent past and is now a popular destination for history enthusiasts in Denmark.
History+
The construction of Kalø Castle began in 1313 under the reign of King Erik IV Menved. A notable event in its history was the imprisonment of Gustav I Vasa in 1518, who was held here by the Danish King Christian II. From about 1660 onwards, the complex began to decay. Since 1945, the castle ruin has been owned by the Danish state.

The castle ruin of Kalø is situated in Kalø Vig, near the town of Rønde in the municipality of Syddjurs, Midtjylland region (Central Jutland), Denmark. It lies at an elevation of approximately 8 meters above sea level.

Today, the castle ruin of Kalø is accessible to visitors and can be explored. Although the complex has been decaying since the 17th century, foundations, some higher walls, and the remains of a main tower are still preserved. The ramparts on the island are also clearly visible.
