Hurwang Castle

Hurwang is the erroneous name for the ruin of Furtheim Castle on the southern municipal boundary of Bolheim and Mergelstetten, a district of the county town of Heidenheim an der Brenz in Baden-Württemberg.

The ruin of the spur castle is located on a hill above the old connecting road to Bolheim.

It was built by the Lords of Furtheim and first mentioned in 1209. In the 12th century, the complex was probably larger than the original Hellenstein Castle.

In documents from Steinheim Monastery, Ulricus von Furtheim is mentioned as a forest master. The county is said to have encompassed the area from Königsbronn, Steinheim, Neresheim to the Lonetal valley. It is unknown when exactly the castle was abandoned. By the mid-14th century, the castle was in ruins. Today, only some wall remains and the castle rampart are visible.

In the last days of World War II, some larger limestone blocks were pushed onto the road below to create a tank barrier against the advancing Allies.

In connection with the castle ruin, there is a legend of a treasure, which is said to include a golden crown and can only be recovered at the witching hour. The story repeatedly attracted treasure hunters, all of whom remained unsuccessful.
