Hunolstein Castle

Hunolstein Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 395 m above sea level in the Hunolstein district of the municipality of Morbach in the Hunsrück.

It is the former seat of the bailiffs of Hunolstein and, according to legend, the seat of the Nibelung Hunold.

The castle dates from the 12th century. It was conquered by Franz von Sickingen in 1522 and so severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War that it had to be abandoned from 1637 onwards.

A round corner tower and remnants of the surrounding walls are preserved. The complex has a length of about 40 meters and is surrounded by a 1.30 meter thick curtain wall, which still has a height of up to eight meters on the south side.

The keep used to stand on a quartzite rock, of which a square wall remnant about three meters high is still preserved. From there, there is a view to the west into the Dhron valley or to the north to the Haardtkopf (658 m) near Gornhausen.
