Hohenwartstein Castle

In 1343, Wichard von Hohenwart appears for the first time in a document, when he leased tithes in the Raabs area from Herzogenburg Abbey. In 1369, an noble Ulrich von der Hohenwartaer is mentioned. In 1404, Pilgrim IV von Puchheim in Litschau enfeoffed the honorable servant Ulreich der Hohenwarter von Hohenwart and his children with the "Newhaus ze Hohenwartstain". This fortress was apparently a fief of Litschau. Around 1584, the castle seems to have been connected with Karlstein, as Adam von Puchheim on Karlstein already had 15 subjects in Hohenwart.

The sparse remains of the largely unknown castle, which is now popularly called Nenhäusl-Schloss, are located opposite the villages of Münichreith and Hohenwarth, not far from the Gerhardsmühle. The few preserved wall remains are heavily overgrown and not easily surveyable or identifiable as a complete complex.
