Hochperwarth Castle

Perwarth Castle (presumably "Bear's Watch") was built in the 12th century. In 1212, the Perwarth family was mentioned for the first time. They originated from the Zinsendorf family. In 1410, the Perwarths were embroiled in a succession dispute with the Wallsees, who, in a punitive expedition, destroyed and burned down the castles of the small Erlauftal, including Perwarth.

After Christoph Freiherr von Concin abandoned Perwarth Castle in 1549, located about 100 m above the present castle ruin, as it no longer seemed habitable enough to him, he had a valley castle built in 1560. To distinguish it, it was called Niederperwarth, while the fortress left to decay was referred to as Oberperwarth or Hochperwarth.

In 1612, the Barons of Concin sold their dominion to Gottfried Freiherr von Tattenbach. In 1635, Cornelius Colonna von Fels acquired it. In 1723, the estate was sold to Karl Graf Zinzendorf, from whom it passed to Ernst Ferdinand Graf Auersperg just four years later. Like many Lower Austrian residences, Emperor Franz I also bought Perwarth in 1834 and united it with the imperial dominion of Wieselburg.
