Hochgrimmenstein Castle

The name Grimmenstein actually stands for three medieval castles. However, only remnants of the square keep of Hochgrimmenstein, located on the summit of the Kulmriegel, have survived. The fortified structure Hintergrimmenstein, situated on the nearby Kleinberg, is also almost completely destroyed. Only Vordergrimmenstein, known today as Grimmenstein Castle, located on the southeast slope of the Kulmriegel, has been preserved.

Hochgrimmenstein, the second oldest of the three castles, dates back to the 12th century and has been in ruins since the 15th century. Its owners were the Grimmensteiners; after their extinction in the 14th century, the complex was united with the Lordship of Pitten and came into princely possession.
