Herwartstein Castle
The Herwartstein ruin is a vanished hilltop castle on the 570 m above sea level Herwartstein above the Brenz south of the municipality of Königsbronn in the district of Heidenheim in Baden-Württemberg.
A castle complex, presumably in Staufer possession, is already known from the early Middle Ages. The name Herwartstein Castle is first mentioned in 1240 in the fiefdom of the Schenken von Herwartstein, then came into the possession of the Counts of Helfenstein and was captured and severely damaged in 1287 by the troops of the Habsburg King Rudolf I. In 1302, the castle was sold to King Albrecht I, who used it to endow the Cistercian monastery of Königsbronn ("Fons Regis"), and the castle site became a quarry. In the 20th century, the foundations were excavated.
