The remains of the Castle can be visited
Heidenburg Castle

The complex, popularly known as Herrenburg or Heidenburg, is the ruin of a hilltop castle near the municipality of Oberstaufenbach in the Verbandsgemeinde Kusel in the district of Kusel in Rhineland-Pfalz. The ruin of the former castle complex stands on an offshoot of the Krämelberg above the Reichenbach valley.
Neither the builder, the exact construction time, nor the original name of the complex are known. Due to the use of Roman building spolia, the complex was mistakenly considered a late Roman hilltop castle. However, the finds allow a dating to the 11th and 12th centuries.
Complex+
Only a few remains of the complex are preserved. Most of the hilltop on which it stood was already quarried away in the 19th century. In 1885, a survey of the then preserved remains was carried out by the Historical Society of the Palatinate.
The castle originally had the shape of a rounded triangle, 98 meters long and 68 meters wide. The internal buildings of the northern castle area are not known. During the investigations in 1885, two-meter thick wall remains were found in the southern area, indicating a residential tower with a floor area of 14 by 17 meters. Adjacent wall remains were interpreted as a chapel.
Due to the quarry, only the southern course of the curtain wall, which had a thickness of 1.50 to 1.80 meters, is preserved today.
