There is little to report about the history of the former castle. The first owner, Pepo de Gruniperc, is mentioned in a document in 1155. He was a ministerialis of the Counts of Poigen. In the later 13th century, the small fortress came into the possession of the Lords of Piber. In 1299, a Rudger der Piber is named as owner and his castle chaplain "Perchtoldus Capellanus de Grünberg". This also indicates the existence of a castle chapel.
In 1318, Ulrich von Maissau acquired the fortified building. In 1321, Ulrich von Maissau sold the castle to the Cistercian convent of St. Bernhard, but stipulated that the fortifications had to be demolished. The complex was completely destroyed at the latest during the Swedish invasion of 1645.
