Grubenhagen Castle

Grubenhagen Castle is the ruin of a lowland castle in Schloss Grubenhagen, a district of Vollrathsruhe in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Only a few structural remains of the castle are preserved, essentially 10-meter-high wall sections of the former keep with a wall thickness of 3.3 meters, made of fieldstones and brick. The rest of the complex can mainly be inferred from the local geological conditions. To the northwest was the circular main castle, which was adjoined to the southeast by a slightly lower, approximately rectangular bailey. The entire complex was surrounded by a wide moat, parts of which are still preserved.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the von Grube family and expanded until the 15th century. The later lords of the castle were the von Maltzan family, who built an estate north of the castle, which eventually replaced the castle as a manor house in the 19th century.
