Grossau Castle

Based on existing finds, a first castle is assumed to have existed in the early 11th century, possibly built of wood. Later, massive stone walls were erected there. In 1204, a "Luitfrid de Grassowe" first appears in a document, referring to the noble family of Grasser who named themselves after Grossau.
The castle was already destroyed after 1300. Speculations suggest destruction by the invading Bohemians around 1330. At that time, "old" Grossau was also abandoned, and the lordship, along with its subjects, moved to the "new" village of Grossau. In 1595, Wilhelm Grossauer von Großau und Autendorf was the last of this lineage.
The ruin is now owned by the Hutterer family from Alberndorf. In recent years, archaeological excavations have taken place on the castle grounds.
