Gröbzig Castle

The remainder of Gröbzig Castle, also known as Gröbzig Palace, stands in the town of Gröbzig in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld in Saxony-Anhalt and is today only preserved through the castle tower.

The origin of the place is probably a Slavic burgwall from the 8th/9th century. However, Gröbzig was first mentioned in a document in 1291. It is possible, however, that the Archdiocese of Magdeburg already had rights in Gröbzig before 1176. Since 1291, the castle was the seat of an Anhaltian Vogt. Later, Gröbzig was the center of a judicial district and a sovereign office. There is no information about the type of fortifications. The only hint of this is the mention of "walls and moats" on the occasion of the granting of the town charter in 1465.

The baroque dome and the half-timbered floor of the tower possibly date from the period after the town fire of 1678.

In 1806, the castle was demolished except for the 14th-century keep.
