Gaber Castle

Gaber Castle, built around 1300, was already reported as desolate in the 15th century. Since the best-preserved walls originate from the former castle chapel, the name Gaberkirche (Gaber Church) has become commonly accepted and is also used on maps.

The Lords of Gaber appear several times between 1327 and 1405. The family was probably not very significant. Little is known about them. The military importance of the small fortress was probably also not very great. Bernhard von Gaber is first mentioned in a document in 1327. Georg von Gaber last appears in 1405. In the late 15th century, Gaber Castle was already described as desolate. In 1543, the ruin passed from the Lords of Eibenstein, together with Eibenstein itself, into the possession of the brothers Christoph and Erasmus von Schneckenreith. Eight years later, Margarethe von Schneckenreith sold the "desolate fortress" to the local community of Luden, which is still the owner of the ruin today.

The ruin, also less frequently referred to as Gaberwaldkirche (Gaber Forest Church), is also said to have been a pilgrimage site known only regionally.
